Search engine optimization (SEO) plays a crucial role in someone finding an item on a search engine such as Google or Bing. SEO also determines how and where an item shows up on Walmart.com.
As a multichannel seller, the ultimate goal is to be on the first page of results when a potential buyer searches for your item.
With a little strategic planning, you’ll be on the way to dominating Walmart SEO.
To begin with, use a tool like Google Keyword Planner to determine which keywords are the most popular and relevant for an item.
Once you have a substantial list, it’s time to place those in the right spots on your Walmart item listings.
According to Walmart, every item listing should include a product name, long description, attributes, images, and key features.
We’ve broken it down into each category to simplify the process for you to master Walmart SEO.
The ideal product name is between 50 to 75 characters in length. It’s good to have a unique product name, but also make it specific to the item to avoid confusing buyers.
According to Walmart, the suggested formula, if you will, is as follows: Brand + Clothing Size + Group + Defining Quality + Item Name + Style + Pack Count.
Good Example: “Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. Men’s Big and Tall Carpenter Jeans”
Bad Example: “Levi Men’s Jeans in Midnight Blue”
As you can see, the latter example is missing quite a few details that specify what the item is.
The description is the place to show off your expertise on the item without copying what others have already written.
Create a description between 1,000-4,000 characters or create a list of 10-30 features. This is where to include the product name, brand, and any keywords for features and benefits of using the item.
Attributes are the categories on the left-side menu when searching for an item on Walmart.com. Buyers use these categories to further narrow the search results by color, size, etc.
Fill out the most relevant attributes for your item, as this will improve an item’s ranking.
We suggest doing a search for your item on Walmart to see what attributes appear in the left-side menu. This is a good indicator for what you should include, too.
Awesome product photos can be the sole reason someone clicks on an item.
It’s important to have professional photos showing off an item from all angles, packaging, or any other accessories. It’s also extremely important to have zoom-enabled images so that buyers feel as if they’re viewing the item in person.
The key features provide another opportunity to include keywords. Choose 3-10 of the most important keywords to include. Make sure the most important keywords are listed first, as those are given importance when Walmart ranks an item in search results.
We can promise that optimizing these key areas will improve an item listing on Walmart and lead to more sales.
Check out ways to optimize product listings on Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, too!
